Yippi-Ki-Yay! Cable is back and kicking ass (no names, sorry…he’s too busy for that).
Previously: Ultimately, not a lot to know here. There’s a guy named Cable…he has a metal arm (even though Hope supposedly cured his T-O virus). He can travel through time. So basically, everything that can be found in a wiki.
Currently: In Arizona, 1874 (yup…the past), a table of guys are playing some poker…a few dead people on the floor, and the rest of the patrons too scared to say or do anything. They’re clearly waiting for somebody. A man walks through the front doors: Cable. The players were waiting for him and draw guns that have no business in the old west. After a quick battle, Cable interrogates one of the men still conscious. The guy agrees to show Cable where some mysterious man went. The mysterious man (we’ll call him Mr. X for now, to simplify things) is the one who supplied the men with the futuristic guns. On horseback, Cable and the henchman ride a short ways from town until they come across a mysterious symbol carved into miles of rock. Cable vanishes in a bright light.
Cable lands in a field in 1543 Japan, another weird symbol carved into ground. Nearby, there is a village, lit on fire. A survivor explains that men with swords of fire did this. Cable promises to avenge her son (somebody forgot to tell him he’s no longer with the Avengers). A short ways away, he finds the men who caused the carnage. He attacks but, like the cowboys earlier, these men have also been amplified (presumably by Mr. X), this time with swords made of fire. At first, it seems no contest, but these new men weren’t by themselves. They had a much larger crew, laying in wait, with bows that shot more than just normal arrows. They rode Cable down, until the leader of this crew manages to cut off Cable’s metallic arm and prepares to deliver the final blow.
Thoughts/Reviews/Snide Comments: First of all, the art is awesome in this issue. Carlos Pacheco has long been one of my favorite X-Men artists and I’ve missed his work. Seeing him back makes me feel all warm and squishy inside. The art is beautiful and the colors are vibrant. The art makes me feel like I’m back in the 90’s again (the ART…not the story…don’t worry).
The story has almost an old west feel to it, and I’m sure that was intentional. Cable has always been somewhat of a loner, that single sheriff who walks into town to clean up the mess, and he does it in both Arizona and Japan (at least we hope). I’m reminded of the way he introduced himself in the old X-Men the Animated Series: The Wild Man of Borneo. I can even hear this Cable talking like that one did…almost like a cowboy. Especially his joke about “I’ve seen bigger”.
There’s clearly something going on here but we’re kept completely in the dark about it. It’s obviously an intentional choice. I’m a little torn with this issue. Robinson is setting up a big bad guy for Cable and I have no idea who it might be, but for being a premier issue and part of the ResurrXion line of comics, I worry this one might fall a little flat, being a bit too slow and not revealing enough. This book was definitely better with a second read. And I’m definitely curious who Mr. X could be (I’m wondering if it’s Stryfe…but I have nothing to base that guess on).
Cable very much has that tough guy attitude, the Clint Eastwood sort of feel to him here, even in his expressions. He makes the kid spill his guts just by grimacing at him. And so it’s these little nuances that really make this issue enjoyable and speak to both the ability of Robinson and Pacheco to tell a story.
Final Thoughts: I want to give this one a higher rating. I really do. I’m looking forward to the rest of the series, but I think for a premier issue…there just wasn’t enough happening here. Not enough hints dropped. Not enough development.
Rating: 6/10. The art is enough to give this book a decent score. Hopefully we can go up from here!
