JUSTICE LEAGUE: Seven of Our Favorite Moments from the SDCC Trailer

DC Comics and Warner Brothers released their new 4 minute trailer for Justice League at San Diego Comic Con this weekend and it sure got the hype machines buzzing! From Motherboxes to New Gods to Aquaman riding on a Parademon, the trailer was full of exciting moments. Here are a few of the best ones that got us cheering and wondering:

Boom Tube on Paradise Island

The trailer features the island of Themyscira, where a strange ceremony of some sort happening with a Motherbox at the center. In the comics, Motherboxes are living God-computers from New Genesis that carry immense power. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a Motherbox, one was being buried in the first Justice League trailer, and we saw one fuse with Cyborg in Batman V Superman. This is the first time we’ve seen one in action though, creating a Boom Tube that is shooting upwards. It’s definitely noteworthy that the Amazons have a Motherbox, and raises the question: Does Diana know they have it, and does she know what it is?

Steppenwolf

We’ve known for some time that Steppenwolf was going to be the villain in Justice League, but this is the first time we’ve gotten a look at Ciaran Hinds’ portrayal of him. Steppenwolf is the General of Darkseid’s Army, so it makes sense that he would be the first of the New Gods sent in an attack from Apokolips. The movies have apparently decided to go with the New 52 design that premiered in the pages of Earth 2 rather than Jack Kirby’s silly green hat. Hopefully this is just the first of many New Gods that we can expect to see.

More of Aquaman riding stuff

Throughout these trailers, Jason Momoa’s Aquaman is emerging as the most endearing part of this whole movie. We got to see him riding on the Batmobile and shouting in delight in the last trailer, so this one had to top it. Aquaman stabs a parademon and rides it through the building, hopping off as cool as can be. Now the question remains: can he look that cool while riding a seahorse?

Cyborg in action

While we’ve caught glimpses before, this is our best look yet at Ray Fisher’s Cyborg. We finally get to hear his voice as he takes control of the Batwing, showing Batman just what he thinks of his “gadgets.”

Red Skies

In some shots in the trailer we can see that the skies have gone red with Steppenwolf’s invasion. Since the groundbreaking maxi-series Crisis on Infinite Earths in 1985, red skies have been an indication that a Crisis is coming. And not just any crisis, but a Crisis, with a capital C. The red skies indicate that the barrier between worlds is weakening and exposing The Bleed, which is the substance within the multiverse. It could just be the simple result of Steppenwolf trying to turn Earth into an Apokoliptian nightmare, which appears to be his goal.

Superman and Green Lantern?

While all the promotional materials have shown 5 main characters for this movie, (those being Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Cyborg and Aquaman) the new trailer did finally allude to the two missing founding members of the Justice League (sorry J’onn, not you.) In the voice over we hear a voice that is presumably Steppenwolf’s say “No protectors here. No Lanterns, no Kryptonian.” The trailer ends with Alfred telling someone off screen that he expected their arrival, and hope they aren’t too late. Could that be a Green Lantern on his way to help Earth, the returned Superman, or even another ally of Batman’s that’s being kept secret?

Jokes!

Despite creating a delightful experience in Wonder Woman, DC/WB has received a lot of critique for making their franchise feel too heavy and without levity. This trailer serves to ease the minds of some fans by providing some solid comedy to a film about the invasion of an evil god. From Alfred referencing wind-up exploding penguins to Cyborg stealing the Batwing to The Flash telling Batman the most he’s done is “push some people and run away,” the characters do seem to be people that actually enjoy each other’s’ company.

One Last Thing: Who was that guy from the weird scene that was cut from BvS?

After BvS came out, the studio released a deleted scene showing Lex Luthor and some creature wielding three Motherboxes. A lot of people came to the conclusion that he was Steppenwolf, a setup for the villain of the next movie. But now that we’ve seen Steppenwolf’s design, we know that’s not the case, so who is this creature? Well, his name is Yuga Khan, and he’s father to Darkseid, the God of Evil and Lord of Apokolips. Whether or not the mythology of Darkseid overthrowing his father will ever come into play in the movies remains to be seen, however. It was a deleted scene, after all.

JUSTICE LEAGUE will be in theaters November 17th. Let us know what your favorite part of the trailer was in the comments below!
