Intro:

Continuing the War Machine arc, we find Punisher going on the offensive against the military of his primary target. In the last issue, The Punisher, thanks to intel from Nick Fury, “tactically acquired” (meaning STOLE) the War Machine armor and took it for a spin. Based on his response to Fury on the last panel, he is apparently in no rush to return it when this specific mission is over.

Summary:

The Punisher wears War Machine armor and intervenes during a crisis and after defeating everyone involved, makes a new friend who he must defend later. This is a very different take on the War Machine character as we see The Punisher use his armor to devastating effect. It was a nice change of pace to see him taken to the next level regarding defense and doubly so for offensive output. We’re reminded of what the armor is capable of when the user disregards any restraint.

The chatter between him and the suit’s AI was funny as well. I’m used to Frank making his own decisions and adjustments as necessary in the field, but seeing the armor do the work and calculations for him was interesting. There was also some bonding and more humor between him and the other main character from this issue. Once they get to know each other on a deeper level, they exchange some witty banter to keep the laughs coming.

Opinions and Such:

I enjoyed the previous issue and enjoyed this one too as I’m waiting on a redemption story of sorts. I wasn’t a fan of how The Punisher character was written in the recent Secret Empire story, but I won’t go into those specifics here.

The art of this new arc is pretty good. I’ve never been a huge art guy; I’ll read a good book even if it’s ugly, but the detail and the chaos of the combat is captured in vivid detail. This has been a great start to his newest story and I want to see where it goes from here. The brutal nature of The Punisher shines as bright as ever and now I’m waiting to see what countermeasures for his armor are available.
