Marvel reveals fifth member of Exiles to be…Tessa Thompson?

After last week’s announcement of the returning Exiles title, Marvel Comics has followed up with them revealing who the hidden fifth member of the new team was set to be. A team of multiverse Marvel Characters….hmmm who’d be a good choice? Old Man Logan? No we have the adorable Wolvie. A Spider of some sort such as Spider-Gwen or Miles Morales? No such luck. The fifth member has been revealed to be Thor: Ragnarok’s Valkyrie!

Really. We’re not kidding. After last year’s smash his Thor: Ragnarok made the controversial choice (SPOILERS) to take Valkyrie, a character who up until that point had been represented as Brunnhilde, a blonde haired, blue eyed woman, and make her an African-American and have this Valkyrie just be one of the Valkyrie legion of Asgard making her name, and her skin color unimportant. Now with Ragnarok come and gone and Tessa Thompson having made a splash in the roll of the sword wielding hero, it seems Marvel has chosen to rectify the problem many fans had of this different Valkyrie never having been in the comics.

Here’s what upcoming Exiles writer Saladin Ahmed had to say about Valkyries edition to the roster:

“Valkyrie’s a character who’s always appealed to me. Her iconic warrior-woman look — spear! sword! flying horse! — but also the juxtaposition of a kickass ancient fantasy hero operating in contemporary New York City. She’s a classic Marvel heroine,” said series writer Saladin Ahmed. “But the EXILES version of Valkyrie is a bit different from what we’ve seen in comics thus far. Our Valkyrie is known as the Lone Defender of Asgard, and she’s a tankard-draining, maiden-wooing, giant-slaying thunderbolt of a woman. Though she’s not technically from the Marvel Cinematic Universe reality, she’s basically the literalization of the larger-than-her-physical-frame swagger that Tessa Thompson displayed in THOR: RAGNAROK, turned up to 11.”

“Like everyone else who has seen Taika Waititi’s brilliant THOR: RAGNAROK movie, all of us on Team Exiles are big fans of Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie,” said series editor Wil Moss. “So when we realized that we had the perfect series — where the roster is made up of alternate reality versions of Marvel heroes — to introduce a comic book equivalent of that version of Valkyrie, we jumped at the chance! And how great is series artist Javier Rodriguez’s design? Such a nice combo of the classic Valkyrie look and the MCU’s, yeah?”

Hopefully Valkyrie will be a well utilized edition to this mixed bag similar to many exiles have been in the past. Come on in a series where Beak can be a hero, anything’s possible.
