Logan, Guardians of the Galaxy Nominated for Academy Awards

Earlier today the full nominations list for the 90th Academy Awards was revealed to the public. Superhero films are often left out of such discussions, yet this year we see two beloved franchises represented.

And the nominees are:

Logan – Best Adapted Screenplay

Logan was an absolutely brilliant take on the comic book film genre. It felt more like a western than it did your typical X-Men flick. Logan was a wonderful sendoff for franchise mainstays Hugh Jackman (Logan) and Patrick Stewart (Professor Charles Xavier), and also introduced us to the extremely talented Dafne Keen (X-23). Logan is up for the “Best Adapted Screenplay” category and was written Scott Frank, Michael Green, and James Mangold (who also served as director for the film).

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – Best Visual Effects

The first Guardians of the Galaxy movie took audiences by surprise when it was released in 2014. Fans fell in love with the hilariously charming ensemble of characters and were anxiously awaiting a sequel. Vol. 2 may not have been as surprising as the first but is still an extremely enjoyable experience with a wonderful cast of characters. One of the finest aspects of the film is the visual buffet it lays out before you with its bright color palate, incredible special effects, and wide array of alien species. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is nominated in the category of “Best Visual Effects” which were handled by Christopher Townsend, Damien Carr, Guy Williams, Jonathan Fawkner, and Dan Sudick.

Do these films deserve their nominations? Do you feel that your favorite comic adaptation was snubbed?

Personally, Logan is one of my favorite comic book films of all time and I believe it deserves every ounce of recognition it is getting; and I also would like to have seen Wonder Woman nominated in at least one category.
