Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows #15

Join the Amazing Spider-Family on a beautiful, care-free and criminal free afternoon at Coney Island. Just what they need! A nice peaceful day vacation. …Yeah, right.  The Parkers have their family time crashed by none other than The Lizard!

The Deets

The issue opens up with the Parkers (Spider-Man, Spinneret, and Spiderling) deciding their next move with the now web-detained Lizard. They soon discover that the Lizard was actually fleeing rather than causing mayhem, but fleeing from whom? After some debate, Team Spider decides to release the Lizard. This leads to a field trip down a dark underground tunnel (shocker! Uh, not THE Shocker, he’s not in this issue. I was just being sarcastic).

What and who our heroes find below is where the action picks up. Three spider-powered heroes and 6-foot tall man-Lizard. Normally those odds would look good for any team up, that is until we see their opponent!

My Take

Renew Your Vows #15 is a fun, feel-good issue. Annie Parker is the eyes and ears of the reader, and she is truly a strong and lovable character. There is a Spider-Dad monologue during the tunnel scene which was my absolute favorite part of the issue. Peter gives his staple “power/responsibility” talk to his daughter, but hearing it from Annie’s perspective leads to a really rewarding moment for her character. I like the gushy stuff, what can I say!

Jody Houser has a clear and heartfelt story she is telling with the “8 Years Later” arc. She has a true grasp of the concept “super” family and it’s fun to see the Parkers work as a team. The Parker chemistry is solid and what is the driving force in the story.  Solid writing by Houser. Personally, I wish the art was a little less cartoony, but that’s my personal preference and opinion. Artist Nick Roche gets the job done regardless.

Overall, I'm enjoying the "8 Years Later" arc. Teenage Annie can win over any reader in a manner of panels. The issue also has a heartfelt Spider-Dad talk that really shows how much heart is behind this story. So, great issue.
