Marvel Comics. The home of comic book superheroes Spider-man, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America, Iron man, Black Panther, and many more, has had a bumpy road over the past few years. Beginning with All-New, All-Different Marvel, all the way to their most recent rebranding of Marvel Legacy, the publisher has caused quite an alarming amount of controvesy. From constant relaunching to #1 issues that caused many readers to drop books, a plethora and surplus of titles that were over saturating the direct market, to changes of status quos, multiple events that changes the Marvel universe forever. Those are only some of the major issues fans have had as of late.
Today however, Marvel Comics has pledged in a new video teaser, that the change everyone wants is coming. Marvel: New Start. Their new direction, rebranding, whatever you want to call it, begins this May with the promise of:
New Creative Teams
Make Mine Marvel!
It all starts today…
With clips from what looks to be an interview with newly appointed Editor-In-Chief Akira Yoshida, also known as C.B. Cebulski, and Chief Creative Officer and once Editor-In-Chief Joe Quesada, proclaiming this new beginning at Marvel.
“I can say, walking through these halls, I’ve never seen more enthusiasm and more excitement for where Marvel Comics is going this year”, says Cebulski. “Not since Marvel Now”, Which one? “have we had such an overarching, line-wide change of talent, on the Marvel Comics line,”
“We really are taking that perspective, which is, if you haven’t read a comic before, if you’re an old lapsed fan and want to come back, this is a perfect time to do it, because as I say they start, and are great jumping on points,” Includes Quesada.
Another line-wide relaunch. Another line-wide restart. The one thing fans thought was going to come to an end with the renumberings and the false relaunch of Marvel Legacy. But as over 1/3 of the lineup of books have been cut months after this relaunch, it only seemed inevitable that Marvel would continue their past trends.
However, this could be the thing fans have wanted. With C.B Cebulski’s entry as Editor-In-Chief, Axel Alonso having “stepped down”, Brian Michael Bendis departing, and several new writers entering Marvel slowly this past year, maybe this is the New Start fans have begged and begged Marvel for. We will know this May. With faces in this new wallpaper worthy image by Jim Cheung including newly restored Ddinson as Thor, golden arm and hammer in tow, Tony Stark as Iron man, with Riri Williams nowhere to be seen, the original Wolverine, Peter Parker Spider-man as well as Venom and Miles Morles Spider-man, both Captain and Ms Marvel, Black Panther and several others. There is definitely a lot in store for the Marvel universe.
