Joss Whedon steps down from his role as writer for the upcoming Batgirl movie. This comes as a rather large shock to the fans, as Whedon is famous for his strong feminine characters. Just last year, he was expressing his excitement to be working on such a powerful character, and that he had big plans for her. What changed?
“Batgirl is such an exciting project, and Warners/DC such collaborative and supportive partners, that it took me months to realize I really didn’t have a story,” Whedon, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly and director of The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron, said in a statement.
Fans are speculating that Whedon decided to step down because of the enormity of the “flop” that was Justice League. Whether or not this was a deciding factor, is yet to be seen. Whedon has worked on multiple Marvel movies with little issue, but DC seems to elude him with creativity. Whedon did not want to bring Batgirl down, so his decision was made in hopes that someone will be able to fill the role better than he could.
Batgirl, known for her powerful storylines and feminist undertones, has been teased a new movie for years. With Whedon stepping down, it now stands a chance to be written by equally as powerful women who have stepped up looking for their chance. Among these women are Roxane Gay and Hope Larson. Twitter has been ablaze since Whedon’s announcement of his resignation.
Roxane Gay, a very talented writer who has renowned essays and novels under her belt as well as the experience from writing for Black Panther’s spin-off World of Wakanda. World of Wakanda was well known for the powerful women and multiple LGBTQ+ characters, which was a huge step towards diversity in the Marvel Comics Universe. Her novel works include An Untamed State and Difficult Women.

Hope Larson, a well known writer who is currently writing for Batgirl comics with Rafael Albuquerque, has stepped up with her large successful background as well. Her feats include owning her own Publishing Imprint, Tulip Tree Press, A Wrinkle in Time graphic novel, and Knife’s Edge.
