Black Panther Reaches One Billion Dollars!

It happened! Marvel’s eighteenth film in their shared Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Black Panther, reaches new heights and will surpass a billion dollars world-wide today. It only took 23 days for Marvel’s first Black superhero to achieve what many were not expecting, one of the top grossing Marvel films of all time.

Nakia, T’Challa & Okoye

At a reported $530, 851, 601 domestic and $500 million internationally, Black Panther is the second best MCU film to date, only after Marvel’s Avengers. The cultural phenomenon of Black Panther is by no means slowing as it reaches this monumental threshold.  The cast is appearing on every magazine you can think of from Essence to Variety to GQ to first comic book film to be featured on a cover of Time magazine, you cannot escape the pull and draw of this film. The film has inspired children and adults and they are all responding in kind with the M’Baku challenge, serious debate and dialogue about the film and it’s deeper meanings for people of the African diaspora, and the greeting “Wakanda Forever,” and even “colonizer” have both joined our every day lexicon.

Early Friday morning Kevin Feige put some burning questions to rest. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Feige not only confirms there were discussions about what to do in a sequel during the creation of the first film but that they will absolutely do Black Panther 2. He also discusses how T’Challa and his cast of characters will continue to be important starting with the events of the next film, Avengers: Infinity War.

In the next Marvel film, Avengers: Infinity War we will return to Wakanda for a massive battle scene inclusive of the other Avengers. Details have not been revealed of what this battle entails but as Captain America, Hulk, Black Widow, Winter Soldier team with T’Challa, Okoye, and Nakia, we can only guess it will reach epic proportions as a major part of the third act of the film. Avengers: Infinity War opens on April 27, projected to be another slam dunk for the Marvel and Disney franchise.
