The Amazing Spider-Man # 797
Norman Osborn is back and he is as menacing as ever. I’m talking Willem Dafoe menacing, not Chris Cooper. Spider-Man is going to have his webs full with this new threat.
Issue #797 opens up with Norman Osborn interrogating an unknown prisoner. It is apparent that Osborn has been tracking the movements of Spider-Man for some time and wants to extract all of his prisoner’s knowledge of the wall-crawler. During this scene, we see Norman on a new level of crazy and I loved every panel! But the question remains: Who is Norman’s prisoner?
Cut to Peter Parker making out with Mary Jane Watson in her apartment. You read that right… Every Spidey lover is asking, “Are mom and dad getting back together?!” Well…. since this is the second scene in the issue, things don’t end well. MJ has reservations about being the superhero girlfriend again. She knows that she will never fully have Peter. His life will always be shared with Spider-Man but our fingers are still crossed for the future.
A lot of action happens in this issue. Spider-Man stops a mugger in an amusing scene. Goblin King and Norman Osborn have a final showdown. Plus Harry Osborn, Flash Thompson (Anti-Venom), and Liz Allen all have parts to play in the upcoming story arch. We are getting back to our roots Web-Heads!
Great Issue. The hype has been real folks, and I am looking forward to reading what’s next in the “Go Down Swinging” story arch. Dan Slott does a great job keeping the story moving. I love that classic Spidey characters are all involved, and that the plot is anything but predictable.
The art has been kicked up a notch since the last issue. The panels are detailed, the coloring is vibrant, and every scene has great backgrounds that give a sense of scope. Overall, I was really pleased with this issue.
