“I’m finishing the mission, Fury, That’s why you sent me.” (Punisher #222 Comic Review)

The Punisher #222: War Machine Part 5

Writer: Matthew Rosenberg

Artist: Guiu Vilanova

Cover:  Clayton Crain

After tearing his way through through a good portion of General Petrov’s men, the Punisher has come up against well-trained SHIELD Agents who went rogue. Even they weren’t prepared for his expertise and outright refusal to die. General Petrov has upped the stakes which are sure to only piss off C further…

What Just Happened:

This fully-loaded issue begins with General Petrov issuing a statement to the country he acquired in his coup: Chernaya. They’ve been officially recognized by the UN as a sovereign nation and will seek to build from there. Unfortunately for those involved, the Punisher crashes the party in his War Machine armor. He resumes his war against General Petrov’s forces, killing a hell of a lot of them before being attacked by the rogue SHIELD Agents that made up his inner circle. The Punisher fends them off, killing two of them.

Fury patches into his comms to chew him out for not leaving the country. Frank disagrees with his assessment as he feels he is close to killing the General and will not stop until exactly that is done. Once he gets the suit to mute Fury, he continues his unrelenting assault against Chernaya’s military. The Rogue SHIELD agents come into the fray and after being questioned about their involvement, admit they’re helping Petrov because he was hiring and they needed jobs. They continue to combat Frank until the unthinkable occurs: General Petrov, shaken by Frank’s assault, decides to initiate the January Protocol by launching one of his nuclear weapons. Frank is in pursuit of the missile with Fury in his ear at the conclusion of the issue.

My Thoughts:

This series has been absolutely action-packed and brutal thus far. This is literally the Punisher at his best and being a fan for as long as I have been, I appreciate it. The War Machine armor has been a good touch for his character and he indeed needs it for the things he’s done thus far. I don’t want this arc to ever end.

Summary
The situation has been ratcheted to the next level with a nuclear weapon in play. Punisher is trying to save the day and win or lose I’ve enjoyed this story immensely since I began. This is one of my favorite stories out right now and it keeps getting better from the last issue. This is probably my favorite of this arc and I eagerly await the next. Even with the amp taking control Frank is still in his element with chaos and war around him. We’ll see what happens with this nuke in the next issue…
