Previously:

Damian and Jon are going to school together, and Damian’s mother is not pleased. Talia Al Ghul came to the school to spy on her son, and had a brief altercation with the Super Sons. After she left, they investigated her and found out that she’s accepted a contract on Lois Lane!

What Happened: Lois is in Gotham working on a story, and the Super Sons need to get to her before Talia does. Damian quickly finds her location, and the two speed off to protect her. Lois is interviewing someone in a coffee shop, and Talia is posted on the roof of the building across the street. She hesitates, wondering where her son is and lamenting the fact that she took this contract just to see how he’s developing. She takes the shot, but the bullet is snatched out of mid-air by something quicker than her eye can see. She radios to some of her lackeys to find whatever it was, and is promptly ambushed by her son.

Talia and Damian fight and argue in classic super-family style as Superboy easily handles the small handful of nameless assassins. Superboy turns to see Lois watching him, who coyly asks why Superboy is in Gotham. Superboy nervously talks to his mother while trying to simultaneously apologize and maintain his secret identity. Damian finishes the fight with his mother, who predictably mocks him for not killing her before vanishing. Superboy meets back up with Robin after his mother lets him off the hook, and notices just how shaken Damian is. Jon reassures him that he’s not the boy his mother raised him to be, and that he’s not alone like she claims he is.

Thoughts on the issue: This issue was quite simply a lot of fun, especially Superboy’s segments. The issue is primarily about the two boys talking to their mothers, with admittedly more focus on Damian and Talia, who have a lot more issues to sort out. Lois talking to Superboy in public was one of the more adorable exchanges I’ve ever read in a comic. Damian and Talia have their standard “you’re a killer/no I’m not” conversation, but the action by Gleason carries the scene. While the Talia scene might be something we’ve seen before, the aftermath was not. Jon has to reassure him, but Damian is more confident that he’s a good person than he’s ever been. It’s nice to see Jon rubbing off on Damian throughout the series without losing what makes Damian fun to read.
