Astonishing X-Men #9-A Man Called X Part 3

Writer: Charles Soule

Letters: Clayton Cowles

Synopsis:

As a reality storm batters London and its inhabitants, Psylocke must choose between trusting the mysterious X and letting London fall to the mercy of Proteus. The Shadow King freed a brand-new threat even after he was defeated. How can the X-Men hope to stand against an enemy that can warp reality itself?

What You’ll Need To Know:

Charles Xavier has obviously taken the body of Fantomex- don’t worry, it was with consent- but he isn’t the same Charles Xavier the X-Men have loved and trusted. He’s now X. He’s more reckless…He’s ambitious. As he was released back into reality, so was an old nemesis. Proteus, aka Kevin MacTaggert. He was thrown completely out of control with his powers, and he was killed because of it. He’s been trying to feed off of the people in London so the two telepaths of the team, X and Psylocke, meet him on the Astral Plane. Kevin greets them with warmth and friendliness, but X does not accept the proposition of them letting him roam about in the real world. This proposition soon turns to a threat. X pulls a gun on him and that turns into a reality storm/morphe between Psylocke and X.

In This Issue:

We did get a little bit more action with Psylocke and Angel  (he saved her). They have both anchored each other in hard situations where they lose control. Since metal can phase Proteus and X was under the manipulation of Proteus, Logan figures stabbing him can solve the problem. You know, he only did it because Fantomex had a healing factor, so he figured that X would be fine after that, right? Nope. Logan screwed up. X doesn’t have that same mutation. It turns out that he lacks it because he didn’t totally take Fantomex’s body. It was used to create his own like Frankenstein. While they all worry about how to heal X, Proteus makes his way through Scotland. He interacts with the citizens and promises them everything they want, but it’s all a plan to bring The Astral Plane into the real world. With his powers, it’s possible. Can the team stop this threat?

Summary
We get a little bit of bonding between Logan and X, they’re always had a mutual respect of each other when he was Professor Xavier, but I feel like they did when Logan called him Chuck. I mean he stabbed him, but still. We’re of course going to see the team relationships develop more when we see them fight Proteus, someone who has control in the real world and Astral Plane. The art was awesome, a lot of different kinds of detail and art styles with in each scene.
Good
  • We’re getting another insane villain who brings Astral Plane issues into the real world.
Bad
  • We need to find more out about X!
