TCWN: What are my comics worth?

Hello my fellow Nerds and Nerdetts. Shoot the Breeze Comics has added a new bi-weekly column just for you newbies to the comic collecting world. But I invite you old scallywags to also take a look. We will try and help you avoid the same pitfalls as some of us have had, when starting your collection. Questions and comments are always welcome.
The conversation always begins with, I found some old comics at my mom’s house. What are they worth? Followed by, they are pretty old and in really good shape. First of all, comic grading is the one place where “really good” shape. Is not really good news for your comics. And believe me, comics from the 1990’s are not pretty old.

In the world of grading comics, there are way too many variables to answer this question without viewing the comics in person. Some of the major flaws to look for: spine roll, spine stress marks, tears, rips, creases, or liquid stains on the cover or the pages. Are there any pages missing, are the staples there and not rusted. Have any of the ads or coupons inside been cut out. All of these factor into the grade, which in turn, determines the worth. Of course  there are a few books, that even in poor condition are still quit collectable. Books such as, Action Comics #1, Amazing Fantasy #14, Captain America #1, Amazing Spider-Man #1, Detective Comics #27 and a few others. But these are some of the most sought after books in the collectors world.

Finally in addition, the most important  thing to always remember. As with anything. A comic is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

Make sure you check in next month when we discuss, What should I collect?
