Evil doesn’t always know it’s evil. Proteus has a wonderful gift for the world—all he needs is a little time for the finishing touches. The X-Men race north to stop him and choose their field commander for the battle to come. It’s the mutants unleashed at last, fighting Proteus’ army for the fate of the planet.
What You Need To Know:
Shortly after fighting Shadowking on the Astral Plane, Charles came back to life as his younger self and brought gifts. He was not the only to bring “gifts” though, his plan backfired and brought Proteus, alter ego of mutant Kevin MacTaggert. He tries to reason with X and Psylocke into letting him be part of the real world, but X draws guns. Proteus was “civil” before, but now he definitely is not. He is a force to be reckoned with, especially since this is all a game to him. The X-Men were able to keep him at bay shortly, but last issue we saw Proteus in a small town in Scotland. He showed off his powers to the people of the town, and promised to give them whatever they wanted. There’s no way that could turn out good.
In This Issue:
Holy acid trip, Batman! Or X-Man. So things turned out worse that expected; the town’s wishes backfired and pretty much killed them all. This is an issue where they cannot save the day, only themselves. It’s always different to see heroes lose and you can see the disappointment in each of the X-Men, but they do not get to grieve the loss of innocent lives, only enduring whatever Proteus throws at them. That goes to show what an insane villain he is. This is such a great suspenseful issue, because anything can happen with someone who can warp reality. X-Men perfectly pulled off something so trippy.
