The menace of one of the most contested and consumed substances has returned! Dark Horse brings us Reefer Madness just in time for folks celebrating 4/20 tomorrow. Multiple Eisner-Award winning editor and designer Craig Yoe has an interesting journey in store for readers that shares, what they call “the comically misinformed ‘dangers’ of marijuana.”
The issue of marijuana use has become more acceptable as many states have legalized medicinal and even recreational use. However, in the 1930’s to the 1950’s, and even in our current political climate, a hysteria of hilarity abounds. Evidenced by some condemnation for the substance back in the day: “Comic books are the marijuana of the nursery; the bane of the bassinette; the horror of the house; the curse of the kids; and a threat to the future”—John Mason Brown, author and critic, 1948
Reefer Madness collects short stories in his whacky and eclectic style: “Satan’s Cigarettes”, “Hopped-Up Killer”, “Teenage Dope Slaves”, “We Can Stop The Enemies of Youth”; “My Scandalous Affair!”; “Dope Menace”; “Holiday of Horror!”, “Hooked!” and many more!
Yoe shares, “This is one of the most fun books I’ve ever put together. Some of the writers and artists that created these comics must have been smoking something to concoct these ludicrous and loony tales of youth gone bad! The comics will serve up lots of lusty laughs for those who partake of contraband ‘giggle-smoke.’ Others attempting to snuff out the wicked marijuana cigarettes that they are sure to unleash unbridled passions will see these comics as moral tales of dire warning!”
Reefer Madness TPB is available now in a collected edition at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and your local comic shop.
