What’s happened here?

After the events of Secret Empire, America is struggling to put itself back together. S.H.I.E.L.D. is no more and the assault by Hydra has devastated a generation of soldiers as well as the morale of a nation. The true-blue, non-hydra, Captain Rogers is back behind the shield, alongside his BFF Bucky, and they’re taking the fight to domestic terrorists wearing the face of a long time baddie, Nuke. Meanwhile, something wicked stirs in Russia. Hydra is being replaced with someone or something new, and maybe worse than Hydra ever was.

The way I see it.

If you’re judging a book by its cover, it’s hard to go wrong with a design by the legendary Alex Ross. The combination of writer Ta-Nehisi Coates (Black Panther) and artist Leinil Francis Yu (Civil War) is a sheer delight. The storytelling largely utilizes Cap’s melancholy, yet determined internal monologue, and the stunning visuals mix together to form an incredibly compelling story. The action is fluid and clear, the characters feel just like they should, and it has echoes of reality that resonate in the way only a proper issue of Captain America can. It utilizes the Secret Empire story as a jumping off point for Steve’s own difficulty in coping with the changes that both he and the world had undergone. It’s almost like it was done on purpose to mirror, you know, Captain America’s reintroduction to the Avengers way back when. Weird how that happens.
