  • Cover Artist: Dale Keown and Jason Keith

  • Letters: VC’s Cory Petit

Fan favorites return and unite to fight a new evil.

WHAT HAPPENED: This issue opens with the reintroduction of fan-favorite character Annabelle Riggs as she enjoys a moment with her girlfriend, Inhuman Ren Kimura, however, the moment is interrupted when Angel/Asgardian Angela and the Asgardian WMD The Destroyer appear. They take Annabelle with them and through a series of event wind up in a brutal battle.

Annabelle, who after the events of Fearless Defenders shares a body with Valkyrie (also known as Brunnhilde), trades place with Valkyrie and the battle continues. They ultimately emerge victoriously but de facto leader Angela has an interaction with a shocking addition, demanding what she was “promised.”

*BREAKDOWN INCLUDES MINOR SPOILERS FOR FEARLESS DEFENDERS*

WHAT MARY HAS TO SAY: Well, this was a book I was *very* excited about. I adored Bunn’s Fearless Defenders run and I certainly adored Annabelle Riggs. I remember screaming into the void after she meets her untimely end at the hand of Valkyrie. So, it’s really exciting for her return and being on a team with Angela just makes it all the better.

Annabelle aside, this a really strong issue and brings together a great team. Angela, “The Destroyer,” Skurge, Annabelle Riggs, Valkyrie, Thunderstrike, and Throg. (Yes, Throg.) I’m really excited to see where this plot goes, especially with the Angela demanding “what was promised” from [REDACTED].

Bunn brings his usual top-notch style to the characters and story. Lolli’s art really brings the action to life and we can expect some awesome space battles from Lolli.

I really want to go into A LOT  more, but I don’t want to ruin the issue for anyone who hasn’t read it. But I will say that if you loved Bunn’s Fearless Defenders, anything with Angela, or Valkyrie than this book is a must read for you.

Summary
Asgardians of the Galaxy #1 is a great first issue that brings back some amazing fan favorites characters and sets up a really interesting plot. Bunn knows these characters inside and out and Lolli’s art is beyond compare here.
Good
  • Return of fan favorites like Annabelle Riggs and Angela
  • Cullen Bunn really knows these characters
  • Still has that Fearless Defenders feel
Bad
  • Not exactly new reader friendly. You’ll need to read Angela: Asgard’s Assassin, Angela: Queen of Hel, and Fearless Defenders to fully get everything.
