Nothing Like a Wedding. . .and a Funeral?! (Thor #3 Comic Review)

“A Lovely Day in Hel for a Wedding”

Writer: Jason Aaron

Artist: Mike Del Mundo

Cover Artist: James Harren, Mike Del Mundo

What You Need to Know: Thor is back, despite being unworthy to hold his hammer he is still the God of Thunder. With Malekith’s attempt to conquer all the Ten Realms, he is back just in time. With Loki escorting him to Hel, he is met with his brother’s Balder and Tyler, Queen Karnilla and Skurge the Executioner. Upon hearing that Queen Sinder is hiding a powerful weapon, Thor and the group attack the War Train, only to find that the weapon isn’t a thing, it’s a person!

In This Issue: Hela and her brother Fenris Wolf have been released from the War Train, and she could not be happier. Attacking Thor and his allies, the group realize that fighting will get them nowhere with Queen Sinder and her armies. It’s Loki that comes up with the bright idea that a Wedding of Hela and Blader are the only way to increase the odds of them winning. But not everyone is on board with this idea, mostly Blader and his lover Karnilla. Meanwhile, Thor begins to doubt that this wedding will help them in the long run and asks Loki to help him get to the gates of Valhalla to recruit warriors and the Valkyries But as Loki helps, one more guest shows up to ruin the nuptials having claim to the Bride Hela.

This is one of those issues that has some deep storytelling to it but is so light-hearted with funny liners thrown in, you find it ever so enjoyable. Thori being proud of being a Flower Girl while Blader is having a mental breakdown about marrying Hela is just an example of how this issue flows. Its enjoyable of course, Jason Aaron’s writing always is, and Mike Del Mundo’s art has officially grown on me with how beautiful Hela is, even in her creepy wedding dress. While throwing a random wedding into the story, it never takes away from all the madness going on since Jane Foster became Thor.

Summary
If you’re still on the Thor Ragnorock kick (which let’s face, it we ALL are ha-ha) you will enjoy seeing the Beloved Queen of Hel, Hela come into the story. But she is just a small mix of what’s going on in the bigger issue. It’s only issue 3 and things are getting hot for Thor and his companions in Hel...in a manner of speaking.
